NVIDIA "GT200" is pretty much ready

More than a few NVIDIA partners have been revealing information about the upcoming "GT200" chip from NVIDIA. The G8x architectures has been with us for an extremely long time, and with the G9x refresh, NVIDIA has had more time than ever to complete the true next generation architecture, known as both "G100" and "GT200". Apparently, NVIDIA has been working hard because the story is that NVIDIA could present its next architecture any day now, if it wanted to, but instead it's going to keep riding the G92 wave until AMD is ready to launch the R7x series.

AMD loses graphics market share to Nvidia

After unusually strong second and third quarters, the desktop graphics card market saw exceptional growth in shipments in the fourth quarter of last year, according to a new report by Jon Peddie Research. The market research firm says unit shipments increased by a staggering 50.3% between Q4 2006 and Q4 2007, and a still-impressive 23% sequentially between Q3 and Q4 2007. The overall value of the desktop graphics card market also increased 46.3% year-over-year, but lower average selling prices actually led to a sequential decrease of 0.6%.

Looking at market share, JPR's numbers suggest that AMD actually lost a fair amount of ground to Nvidia in Q4 despite the arrival of its Radeon HD 3800 series. Nvidia reportedly expanded its slice of the desktop graphics card market from 64% in the third quarter to 71%, leaving AMD with less than a third of all shipments.

Tohle je pro me docela prekvapeni. Spis bych cekal, ze s prichodem HD38x0 se situace moc nezmeni nebo naopak vice srovna.

RV670 vyšla v polovině listopadu, tedy v době, kdy už OEMs měli hotové smlouvy pro předvánoční trhy, takže mě to ani příliš nepřekvapuje. G92 vyšla koncem října, takže tenhle velký segment trhu ATi sebrala (tehdejší nedostatek GF8800GT by se dal vysvětlit i přednostým dodávkám OEMs, které by logicky korespondovaly s těmito výsledky - nemyslím si, že by je mohla způsobit G84). Čekám, že výsledky za Q1/08 budou pro ATi o něco lepší, to už RV670 vcelku dominovala (více modelů, dostupnější, X2), vliv OEMs by nemusel být tak značný a G94 by se ještě projevit neměla. Otázkou může být vliv GTS-512 a low-endových DX10.1 RV620 a RV635.
