Although the engineering models of Kentsfield processors worked in the majority of the existing motherboards, which support Conroe. Many was assured that Intel at the last moment will make the Kentsfield processor limited only in new very expensive motherboards. To certain degree this information was justified in connection with the compatability of Kentsfield processors with motherboards on base of chipset Intel P965, but the corresponding nuances simply has not reached large scales.
In the recent days was discussed processors Core 2 extreme QX6700 and Core 2 quad Q6600,. Associates determined, what motherboards can work with Kentsfield processors . For this they interrogated the chief producers, and they composed the preliminary list of the compatible motherboards.
Here is the list of compatible Asus motherboards , since many overclocker will use them in the future:

Asus P5WDG2 WS Professional - > Bios 0307 and later;
Asus P5W64 WS Professional - > Bios 0116 and later;
Asus P5W DH Deluxe - > Bios 1403 and later;
Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi- AP - > Bios 0709 and later;
Asus P5B Deluxe - > Bios0709 and later;
Asus P5B - > Bios will be released ;
Asus P5b- e - > Bios will be released
Asus P5b- e plus - > Bios 0108 and later;
Asus P5b- p5b-v - > Bios 0403 and later.
As you see, motherboards Asus on base of chipset i975X and P965/G965, which support processors Core 2 duo, assure the compatibility with Kentsfield and foe this it was required to passe with the new revisions - it is just sufficient to simply update the bios.
For MSI motherboards the question of compatability with Kentsfield is solved - the newest models do not require a bios update :

MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp Edition (Ms-7246) - > Bios V7.2 and later;
MSI P965 Platinum (Ms-723 - > Bios V1.1 and later;
MSI P5N Diamond (Ms-7320) - > Bios update is not required;
MSI P5N Platinum (Ms-7350) - > Bios update is not required.
It s important to remember that revisions MSI 975X Platinum series 1.xx was not realdu to support Conroe , therefore they can not work with Kentsfield. So that would exclude the confusion, MSI released during June compatible motherboard with Conroe named "975X Platinum PowerUp Edition".
Situation with Gigabyte motherboard is much more complex. Although this producer is going to add support for Kentsfield with different motherboards on base chipset i975X, P965, G965, i946x and i945x, this can be made for only revisions of series 2.xx of these motherboard, which will be released in the middle of October. However, the part of motherboard revisions series 1.xx can support the processors of family Core 2 quad after the simple bios update.
ECS proposes support for Kentsfield with two motherboards:

ECS PX1 (Intel 975X) - > Bios from 27.09.2006 or later;
ECS P965t- A v.1.0B (Intel P965) - > Bios from 27.09.2006 or later.
Biostar, for example, generally proposes support for Kentsfield only for motherboard TForce P965, which will be released only during November. The list of compatible with the four core processors Intel motherboards in non excitant, but today for us we understood that motherboards with support Core 2 duo can work also with Kentsfield.
