G71, Geforce 7900 GTX taped out

WE HAVE confirmation that Nvidia has now taped out its G71 chip. It is up and running and according to our sources Nvidia is on schedule.

The only problem is that we're unsure what the real schedule is. I can tell you that it is probably not realistic to expect this chip and cards based on G71 sooner than end of February. Early March could be the best bet, but this is the perfect case scenario. It is a long time from tape out till final chip and we know that Nvidia taped out the chip in the first half of January.

NVIDIA G71 Comes In 2 Variants
There is no doubt NVIDIA will be launching the 90nm G71 in March and the official name will be GeForce 7900. We came to know that there will be 2 versions; the GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB and the GeForce 7900 256MB. The GeForce 7900 GTX will be launched at CeBIT on 9th of March while the GeForce 7900 GT will be launched later on 20th March most likely together with the GeForce 7600 series. There are little information about the pipelines and clock speeds yet. The current rumours implied a 32 pipes G71 so if that is true, 7900 GT could be 24 pipes. We overheard a yield issue that leads to the delay so it could probably meant a high core clock or too many pipelines causing the problem.

GeForce 7900 GT Card Info

We have seen the GeForce 7900 GT card already and we can say that the PCB layout is different from the current 7800GT card. The PWM area is slightly different too.

The GeForce 7900 GT card comes with 256MB of K4J55323QG-BC14 GDDR3 memories from Samsung which has an effective data rate of 700MHz so a good guess will be 1.2GHz memory clock for the 7900 GT.
We will eagerly wait for the launch in March during CeBIT.
