hp business desktop pcs, IBM Deskstar (model DTLA only) hard disk drive firmware update

HP is offering a free firmware update that eliminates the possibility that an IBM Deskstar hard disk drive, model DTLA, incorporated into HP business desktop PCs may, in a specific situation, write data to the wrong location, which could cause some data to be lost or overwritten.

Specifically, the IBM Deskstar (model DTLA) disk drive firmware design creates a risk that, under certain circumstances, data will be written to the wrong location during a disk operation called "SMART offline data collection." For most users the risk is small.

All HP PC systems shipped from HP as of July 1, 2001 contain drives with upgraded firmware and are therefore not affected by this issue. IBM has also upgraded all next-generation hard disk drives.

The potentially affected platforms are:
Vectra vl800, Vectra vl600, Vectra vl400, Vectra vli8, Brio ba410, Kayak xu700, Kayak xu800 and Kayak xm600.

To determine if your HP business desktop PC has an affected IBM Deskstar drive, you should download the HP detection tool below and run it on your HP PC. This should take about one minute.

If your HP business desktop PC is affected, HP recommends that you update your drive firmware, which can be downloaded below. This should take about 15 minutes.

The firmware update is designed to work only on HP products.
