Q:According to Microsoft, Win XP will not see beyond 137 until you add a registry value called "EnableBigLba". Here's the Knowledge Base article:

During format, Win XP saw just 137 GB & when the OS install was complete, the first thing I did after installing all the drivers was to add that registry value. I then looked at the drive in device manager and it still showed less than the full capacity. In XP device manager there's a tab with a button that says "populate" and when clicked, gives you the way your HDD is set up. When I clicked it, it said I had 170 something total, 127 GB free & 40+ GB "unallocated". That tells me that the OS knows it's a 180 GB drive, but the hardware won't let it access the space beyond 137.

My guess is that IDE 1&2 on the MoBo (at least with it's current F1 BIOS) won't do the 48 bit LBA. Logic tells me the first thing to try is to move the HDD to IDE 3 where it will feed the Promise ATA/RAID chip & use it's BIOS & drivers. Maybe it will do the same thing the Promise controller card that came with the HDD is supposed to do?

Anybody have any ideas or experience on this??

A:
Due to the original BIOS limitation Windows XP only made the initial partition to this (137GB) size. You have an additional 40GB of the drive you need to make a partition and format in order to use. So instead of having one drive letter on the desktop you will have two.

Right-click on "My Computer" Icon on the desktop.
Select "Manage".
Open the Disk Management folder under Storage.
Make sure the screen is expanded for full view.
In the bottom right-hand window you will see the drive's 40GB unallocated area.
Right-click on the unallocated area and select to create a new partition.
Select to create a Primary partition.
Accept the defaults on the following screen by pressing the Next button.
When finished the additional 40GB will be partitioned, formatted, and ready for use.

If you want one large partition you would need to erase the drive and start over with the drive connected to the Promise Controller. When booting to the Windows XP CD you press F6 to install the drivers for these controllers.

There you have it!

I now have a 180GB HDD, with 2 partitions, hooked to IDE 1 on the MoBo.

I'm still not clear on why you can't hook the drive to IDE 1 & automatically get a format greater than the 137GB.
